A person has been arrested and charged with first-degree murder in Monday’s shooting at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
A UNC graduate student, Tailei Qi, was arrested and charged with first-degree murder and having a “gun on educational property,” said Orange County District Attorney Jeff Neiman, according to The News and Observer.
The Monday shooting resulted in a faculty member’s death in a campus science building.
The motive for the shooting was unclear as of Tuesday morning, according to police.
Classes, which started at UNC around a week ago, were canceled for Monday afternoon and Tuesday. UNC Chancellor Kevin Guskiewicz wrote in a statement Tuesday that the school is waiting until the next of kin of the victim is notified until they release more information.
