Hurricane Idalia set to crash into Florida as major storm: live updates

Forecasters expect Hurricane Idalia to crash Wednesday morning into the Big Bend region of Florida as a “catastrophic” storm.

The National Hurricane Center, in its 7 a.m. update, said the storm’s winds had decreased to about 125 mph, making it a Category 3 storm. Overnight, it had intensified into a Category 4 storm.

Forecasters predict storm surge of 12-16 feet above ground level and “destructive waves” are predicted as the storm makes landfall between the Wakulla/Jefferson County line and Yankeetown, Florida.

The predicted path of the storm crosses into southeast Georgia quickly after landfall, then following up the southern coast of South Carolina by the early hours of Thursday.
